Former leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, urges The United Nations to denounce nuclear weapons. Russia and the United States hold about 90% of all the nuclear weapons in the world, and the Cold War that Gorbachev tried so hard to stop could be returning. He says that “Politicians and military leaders sound increasingly belligerent and defense doctrines more dangerous. Commentators and TV personalities are joining the bellicose chorus. It all looks as if the world is preparing for war.” He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for “losing the Cold War,” but in reality if he didn’t step down first then the Cold War could still be around nowadays.
He also proves his point that most of the problems nowadays can’t be solved with war. The religious wars can’t be solved because one is going to be eliminated and the other is going to want to get revenge. Hunger, disease, health insurance, and all the other problems really aren’t going to happen with people getting shot or blown up. “We must break out of this situation. We need to resume political dialogue aiming at joint decisions and joint action.” – Gorbachev.
