Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer of Facebook and founder of Leanin.org, donates $1 million of her own to Planned Parenthood. Sandberg is an icon among working women, and regretted that she did not give a public statement about the Women’s March on January 21st. Her position as a powerful woman in technology is being leveraged during STEM meeting and tech summits to bring up education for women and minorities.
Sandberg has funded Planned Parenthood in the past, but this time is more urgent than others. The Republican party is currently looking to defund Planned Parenthood, so the organization will have to look elsewhere to keep its services funded.
Sandberg has been unhappy with Trump’s decisions so far, stating that the immigration ban was “particularly unforgiving” for women. Previous presidents may have made similar bans, but this one is harsher and broader because it affects all programs under global health assistance, not just Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood alone has received hundreds of millions of aid from Medicare, so much more will be required to keep Planned Parenthood afloat.
In an interview with Refinery 29, she stated her reason for supporting women’s health so aggressively: “I started my career working at the World Bank on health care in India. I saw firsthand how clinics funded by foreign aid are often the only source of health care for women. When women are given even the most basic health care information and services, they live longer, healthier lives — and they give birth to children who live longer, healthier lives… The best way to prevent abortion is through more family planning services, not fewer… Women’s rights are human rights — and there is no more basic right than health care. Women around the world deserve our support.”
